Big pairs usually make powerful starting hands. A pair of deuces is a weak starting hand, but a pair of aces is the best starting hand. The weak hand could be played only in the late position in an unraised pot. A few medium pairs can win the pot, however with smaller pairs; you would be looking to make a set or a straight draw if possible. The odds of getting a pair as a starting hand are 16:1 or about one out of 17 hands. The odds of getting any specific pair such as a pair of aces are 220:1.
